Running on Empty – Who Cares About a Drought!

Running on Empty – Who Cares About a Drought!

Open fire hydrant on rainy day

Open fire hydrant on a rainy day.

Fact: A running fire hydrant without a sprinkler cap wastes up to 1,000 gallons of water per minute (depnyc).

Fact:  Combined water and sewer rate in New York City is $9.27 per 100 cubic feet of water (depnyc).

1 cbw = $.09

Fact:  There are 748 gallons per 100 cubic feet of water (cfw)

1 gallon = ~.137 cfw

& vise verse

1 cfw = ~7.48 gallons

Lets do the math.  An open hydrant running for 1 minute will dispense an estimated 1000 gallons of water.  To determine the cubic feet contained in 1,000 gallons of water we will multiply 1,000 by .137

1,000 x .137 = 137 cfw

We calculate the cost of 137 cfw by multiplying it by .09 cents.

137 x .09 = $12.33

So, to recap:

Open Hydrant opened for 1 minute = 1,000 gallons of water = 137 cfw = $12.33

Why pay when you can wash your car for free.

In summary an open fire hydrant without a sprinkler cap will cost an estimate of $12.33 per minute.  Next time you want to save the $10 cost of taking your vehicle to the carwash by doing it yourself using a fire hydrant, think of what it’s costing the taxpayers.  A 20 minute car was session at a fire hydrant can cost an estimate of $247.

I am all saving a dollar but not if it’s at the expense of other people’s money.  REMEMBER:  It is illegal to open a fire hydrant without a sprinkler cap (depnyc).  If money is tight and your only solution to washing your vehicle is using a fire hydrant then just drive around until you find one with a sprinkler cap.  If you want to use the one on your block but it doesn’t have a sprinkler cap then just find a 5 gallon bucket and use it.  Open the hydrant, fill the bucket, and then close the hydrant.  We need to live up to our social responsibilities and not sabotage the environment for the future of our children.

In 2006 everyone wanted to crucify British Petroleum (BP) because of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.  An unfortunate accident turned tragedy claiming the lives of 11 people and spilling over 210 million gallons of petroleum into the gulf.  Since BP is a powerful multinational corporation we believe in holding them accountable for any damage done to the environment because it’s part of their corporate social responsibility.  Yet, how do we respond when environmental damage such as a significant amount of water is wasted by one individual.  If you remember the commercials – “If its yellow let it mellow, if its brown flush it down” then, like me, you were subject to the drought of 1988.  It was a campaign advising the public on conservative water usage since our reservoir were below emergency reserve levels.  That’s why it strikes a chord in me ringing my nerves whenever I see an open fire hydrant with no one around.  It’s usually at the end of what was a very hot summer day when it starts to get dark.  If you use the water from a hydrant to cool off on a hot day, please, just close it when you’re done.  I don’t want my children and their children to have to live a life with restricted water usage 100’s of years from now because today we waste water.
